PLAYA DEL CARMEN - MEXICO!
Once upon a time, Playa del Carmen was
a fishing village with a ravishing deserted beach.
The villagers fished and raised coconut palms
to produce copra, and the only foreigners who
ventured here were beach bums.
That was a long time ago, however. These days,
although the beach is still delightful -- alabaster-white
sand, turquoise-blue waters -- it's far from deserted.
In fact, Playa has become one of Latin America's
fastest-growing communities, with a population
of more than 135,000 and a pace almost as hectic
as Cancún's.
Hotels, restaurants, and shops multiply here faster
than you can say "Kukulcán."
Some are branches of Cancún establishments
whose owners have taken up permanent residence
in Playa, or commute daily between the two places;
others are owned by American and European expats
who came here years ago, as early adopters. It
makes for a varied, international community.
